GRISTLEIZER

'Industrial' audio effect unit

My original Gristleizer units were based around the Roy Gwinn 'GEP' design published in Practical Electronic and sold in kit form (just the PCB & components) by Phonosonics in the UK in 1977. This LINK takes you to the current location of the schematic (look under Effects\PE Stuff\Guitar Effect). I've really never made any secret of the origins of the Gristleizer and in fact some years ago I briefly had the Phonosonics schematic on my website for all to see. However, I added some mods of my own and designed a completely new case and made units for myself, the band (TG) and friends. Only probably about 10 units in total.
Cosey's Gristleizer still works to this day but mine was unfortunately 'lost' shortly after appearing in the TG24 exhibition in London a couple of years ago (BTW: if the person who took it has a conscience would they PLEASE return it?). Anyway... I'm currently in the process of building myself a replacement, or two.

This unit is Cosey's (still functioning!) Gristleizer from 1977. It was the third unit I built but only the second to be fitted into this case design. It has the serial number 02 on the base.
Except for the first prototype (which was in a slightly larger case) all the Gristleizers I made were built into this case design.

The rear view shows a DIN socket for connecting the additional 'Effect ON/OFF' footswitch. The two blank holes were intended for CV in and out signals. But the feature was removed on this unit.

The interior view shows the Phonosonic PCB plus some of my additional modifications. Namely:
- placing the Bias control on the front panel.
- including an 'Effect Level' control
- an LED 'Effect ON/OFF' indicator.

Other Gristleizer mods included CV in and out and a rare dual Gristleizer (only one built, for a modular system) that allowed simultaneous VCF and VCA effects.

Sound examples and further photos to follow in the coming weeks...
Also when I have more time I will try to post some articles/interviews I did some years ago about the Gristleizer.
